FAQ

Naturally dark—and that’s what makes them so distinctive. Tahitian pearls get their color from the black-lipped oyster (Pinctada margaritifera), which develops rich, dark tones during the growing process. These unique hues, from charcoal to deep green and peacock, are part of what makes Tahitian pearls so captivating.

Tahitian pearls are known for their rich range of colors, including black, green, gray, and red tones. Among them, the “peacock green” variety—featuring deep green with reddish overtones—is especially popular and highly valued for its beauty.

Authentic Tahitian pearls are cultivated exclusively in the lagoons of French Polynesia—Tahiti being the most well-known, but the region includes many islands and atolls. The specific combination of the black-lipped oyster and those particular growing conditions is what produces the coloring you won’t find anywhere else.

A few things working together: they take longer to grow than most other pearl types, they’re more difficult to cultivate, and truly high-quality specimens—round, clean-surfaced, with strong luster and vivid overtones—are not easy to come by. Size matters too; Tahitian pearls typically run 8–16 mm, which is larger than most freshwater or Akoya pearls. The combination of size, color, and luster is what drives their value.

More ways than you might expect. A Tahitian pearl pendant or necklace adds something to an evening look without needing much else. Simpler pieces—studs or small drop earrings—work just as well with everyday wear, where the dark color creates an interesting contrast against lighter clothing. If you’re used to thinking of pearls as strictly formal, Tahitian pearls are a good reason to reconsider.
