Our Master Selectors judge every pearl with a trained eye, years of practice behind each decision, and only the pearls that meet WSP's standard make it through.

That kind of skill has to be taught in person, not written down. So we train the next generation of selectors, and put our work into keeping the pearl industry itself healthy for years to come.

Three collections, drawn from Japanese tradition

Every WSP piece starts somewhere in Japanese culture: a line of script; a wave pattern; a braided cord.

KOKORO: Heart

KOKORO takes its cue from renmentai; the flowing, connected kana script used to write classical Japanese poetry.

Kana was created to put feeling into writing, and that's what this station necklace carries: the word こころ, "heart," drawn as one continuous cursive line at its center.

Turn it in the light and the luster of the Akoya pearls shifts against the diamonds beside them, catching a different expression at every angle, the way a person does.

UNERI: Swell

UNERI brings a kissho-mon (one of Japan's auspicious patterns) into jewelry.

It's built on seigaiha, the repeating arc of blue-sea waves that carries a wish: that calm, ordinary days keep coming, for a long time. The design holds that idea: depth beneath a still surface; water that never stops moving.

Fine waves repeat across the piece, and the soft luster of Akoya pearls settles into them. Quiet, but it doesn't go unnoticed.

YUI: Knot

YUI starts with Kyo-kumihimo, the braided silk cord made in Kyoto for the tea ceremony.

You'll find it tying the shifuku pouch that holds a tea caddy, or hanging a scroll; a small, exacting craft, here rendered in gold.

Goldsmiths worked the interlacing of the silk into openwork metal, so the braid's pattern shows through as light passes. It sits along a strand of Akoya pearls as the piece's one bright accent.

How We Define Quality

The highest grade of Akoya pearl. Only the top 5% qualify.

Pearl Grades

There's no single, industry-wide grading standard for pearls: worth knowing before you shop anywhere.

So we built our own. We grade every pearl A through E on three things: Luster, Nacre thickness (the layers the oyster builds up around the pearl) and Surface. Only pearls that come in at A, B or C make it onto the site.
