Pearls are the star here, so the inspiration came from the ocean — where else? I've lived in L.A. and in Hawaii, and the water was always right there. I designed these looking out at the ocean, the way you'd paint a picture.
In my twenties, I wore cotton pearls myself — those lightweight imitation pearls. But somewhere in my thirties, faux jewelry stopped suiting me. It started to read as cheap on me.
Where I live, the climate means I'm usually in a simple shirt or a T-shirt. Even then, pairing it with real jewelry takes away any mismatch between what I'm wearing and where I am in life.
With MARLENA, I wanted to show women in their thirties and beyond how much fun it is to wear real pearls with the clothes they already live in.
MARLENA's pearls are exceptional, and that comes from decades of hand-selecting expertise. It's exactly why I chose silver over gold — silver steps back and lets the pearl's own beauty come forward.
