WSP Proof of Quality: Pearl Grading

Authentic grading based on 30 years of wholesale experience.
Learn correctly the three pillars that determine pearl value: luster, nacre, and blemishes.

Our Commitment to Quality

Unlike diamonds, pearls have no universal grading system. To make your choice easier, WSP developed a strict five-level grading scale (Grades A–E).

We carefully evaluate the balance of luster, nacre, and surface condition.
Online, we offer only Grades A (Excellent) through C (Standard).
Pearls that fall below this standard are not part of our collection.

The Three Pillars of Pearl Quality

Truly beautiful pearls are defined by a high level of balance across all three elements.

1. Luster

The strength of shine, often called the life of a pearl. Strong luster reflects surroundings like a mirror and gives depth. It is the most eye-catching element.

2. Nacre

The thickness of the pearl layer. Thick nacre improves durability, prevents aging, and creates complex colors through light interference (aurora effect).

3. Blemishes

Surface smoothness. Pearls naturally have tiny imperfections called dimples, but we select pearls with smoother surfaces that do not detract from their appearance.

Pearl shape and size

Because pearls are gemstones created by nature, no two are exactly alike.
We introduce their diverse shapes and the sizes that change their impression.

Shape

Pearl shapes are clearly defined into specific categories such as round, semi-round (almost round), semi-baroque (slightly irregular), and baroque (irregular). Other shapes include drop (teardrop), button (slightly flat), and oval (elongated).

Size

  • Since each pearl differs in size, we display them in grouped ranges based on the following rules.
  • Akoya pearls are listed in 0.5mm increments.
For example, 7.0–7.5mm includes pearls from 7.0mm up to but not including 7.5mm (up to 7.49mm).
  • Other pearls (such as South Sea pearls) are listed as “UP.”
For example, 9mm UP refers to pearls from 9.0mm up to but not including 10.0mm (up to 9.9mm).

FAQ

We suggest starting with our "Grade B (Fine Quality)" or higher. This grade strikes the perfect balance of durability and brilliance, making it versatile enough for both casual and formal settings. For an heirloom piece designed to last a lifetime, our "Grade A (Excellent)" is the ideal choice.

Nacre is the heart of a pearl's longevity. A thick nacre layer protects against aging and allows the pearl to remain beautiful for generations. This depth also produces Luster the radiant luster unique to high-quality pearls. WSP places the utmost importance on harmonizing these two essential elements.

Your peace of mind is our priority. Every order is fully insured and meticulously packed in a protective jewelry presentation box. We guarantee a full refund or replacement should any damage or loss occur during delivery.
