FAQ

Yes—freshwater pearls are genuine cultured pearls, grown inside freshwater mussels through the same basic biological process as any other pearl. WSP uses only authentic freshwater pearls; no glass, no plastic, no imitations.

The main differences come down to where they’re grown, how they’re structured, and what they look like. Akoya pearls are grown in saltwater Akoya oysters and are known for their round shape and bright, mirror-like luster—often associated with classic pearl strands. Freshwater pearls are grown in mussels in lakes and rivers and are composed primarily of nacre, allowing for a wider range of natural shapes and colors, which gives them greater design flexibility.

More so than many people expect. With proper care, freshwater pearls can be enjoyed regularly and keep their beauty over time. As with any pearl jewelry, keep them away from harsh chemicals, put them on after perfume or cosmetics, and store them separately from other pieces. Simple, routine care helps maintain their luster for years to come.

This is one of freshwater pearls’ real strengths. In terms of shape, you’ll find everything from classic rounds and ovals to baroque pearls (irregular, organic shapes that are entirely natural). Color-wise, freshwater pearls occur naturally in white, soft pink, peach, and lavender—without any dyeing or treatment. That variety is part of what makes them so versatile as a design material.

After wearing, wipe the pearls gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove any residue from skin or cosmetics. Store them in a soft pouch or a separate section of your jewelry box, away from harder stones like diamonds that could scratch the surface. As with all pearl jewelry, put it on after applying perfume or lotion—chemicals are the main things to avoid coming into contact with nacre.
